Clinical significance:
Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), also known as serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), is a tissue enzyme that catalyzes the exchange of amino and keto groups between alpha amino acids and alpha-keto acids. AST is widely distributed in cardiac, hepatic, muscle and kidney tissues. Injury to these tissues results in the release of the AST (GOT) enzyme to general circulation. Following a myocardial infarction, serum levels of AST (GOT) are elevated and reach a peak 48 to 60 hours after onset. Hepatobiliary diseases, such as cirrhosis, metastatic carcinoma, and viral hepatitis also will increase serum AST levels. Although an elevated level of AST in the serum is not specific of the hepatic disease, it is mainly determined to diagnose and to verify the course of this disease with other enzymes like ALT (GPT) and ALP.

Intended use:
The Cypress Diagnostics kit GOT (AST) is an in vitro diagnostic medical device intended to be used for the quantitative measurement of GOT (AST) in human serum or plasma. The device is not automated. The measurement of GOT (AST) is intended to be used for the screening for liver disorders, the aid in diagnosis of liver disease and the monitoring of the effectiveness of liver disease treatment. This kit is intended to be used by healthcare professionals in a laboratory-based testing environment.
